2011: H.A.R.R.E.

Well, I finally put this guy up for sale on Amazon. I even paid for some cover art from the inimitable Muh Dipo (crackworkz@gmail.com).

Brandon Sanderson got an invitation from John Joseph Adams to participate in an anthology of stories about power armor. He asked me if I wanted to write such a story and, of course,  I said yes (while doing a little dance). Brandon replied to Mr. Adams that he’d be happy to participate in the anthology if he could do so with a co-author. Mr. Adams said that would be fine and off we went.

I brainstormed, outlined and finally finished the story on 30 April 2011 (deadline May 15th) and sent it to Brandon for editing while he was at Penguicon 2011. Then I spent the next several days agonizing over what Brandon would think of it. My agony was only exacerbated by the fact that I had exceeded the wordcount specified by Mr. Adams (7500) by 1100 words and was unable to chop the story further. Incidentally, that 8600 wordcount turned the story into a novelette.

26 July 2011: Mr. Adams officially accepted the story some time ago and has announced the sale of the anthology, entitled ‘Armored,’ to BAEN.

And here’s a link to an article io9 did on the anthology.

And cover art!  Bad ass cover art!

And, real final cover art as well as the table of contents!

And a review! I’ll leave it to you to realize why I picked this one to link to.

  1. Just read HARRE in the Armored anthology. Best story of them all in my opinion. Any chance you wrote a prequel or sequel or better yet a complete novel after publishing this? This story goes down as one of my favorites, right up there with Starship Troopers and Armor. I am hoping you have written a novel or have plans to. It’s a great story. Thanks

  2. Hi, Bob. Sorry I didn’t notice this comment (checks watch) 2 years ago.

Thank you very much for the praise. I’m really glad you liked the story. Sadly, there is neither a prequel nor a sequel, though they are not off the table. I’ve got a novel with an agent right now that you’ll probably like if it ever get’s bought and published. We’re in heavy revision stages right now.

For now, have you read “Among the Apple Trees” on SmallWarsJournal.com? I’m pretty proud of that one too. https://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/among-the-apple-trees
